Real Gap volunteers are needed to help conserve and maintain the magnificent environment of the Okavango Delta in Botswana: one of the most untouched wild areas of Africa.
Getting involved in this project in Botswana offers you the chance to monitor and observe elephant herds, go hippo and crocodile spotting, assist with helping out community projects and experience real camp life surrounded by the incredible African wildlife of the Okavango River.
The Volunteer Project
If you join this project you will find yourself part of some of the most exciting and unique programmes operating on the Okavango River system. You’ll be given the opportunity to study the great animals of Africa - leopards, hippos, crocodiles and elephants. You would be able to visit areas where countless other species such as lion and buffalo fight for supremacy in this beautiful region.
Your work will include the following exciting projects:
- Monitoring crocodile populations on the Okavango
- Hippo/Human Conflict - Help to develop new strategies in damage limitation between the two species.
- Elephant Migration Routes - You will be among the first people to record elephant movements on the Okavango.
- Sepopa Community Projects - In and around the village there are a number of highly important community projects running, which you will be actively involved in.
- Project Excursions - In addition to these regular projects, our expert team of local guides will take you to some of the other places that make Botswana so special
Project LocationYou will be based at the volunteer camp on the west banks of the Okavango River, nearly 300km from Maun, the region’s capital. The camp is very close to Sepopa - a rural African village that sits on the gateway to the river.
Accommodation and meals
You will be living under canvas in a traditional campsite within an idyllic fishing lodge constructed on the Okavango River: 2 km from Sepopa and around 300km from Maun. There is access to washing and toilet facilities, including clean tap water and hot showers. Sleeping areas are divided into Male and Female. There is also a kitchen available, and you will also be able to enjoy a genuine African campfire and cooking where you will take your turn in helping to cook the evening meal. You will enjoy three meals and as much juice, coffee and tea as you want.
